Louis-Philippe Joseph d’Orléans: nobleman, revolutionary and the visionary behind the transformation of the Palais Royal. A political radical, after the Revolution he was named Philippe Égalité and he voted for the death of his relative King Louis XVI. His political credentials notwithstanding he was subsequently guillotined himself. He was the father of France’s last monarch, King Louis Philippe.

During the second half of the 1780s, the Duke of Orléans was one of the richest men in the world. In 1787, his rent roll amounted to 7,500,000 livres (over £48 million in today’s money) and his sprawling estates ‘ran to the extent of three or four of today’s départements’.1
